Duke of Edinburgh Award
Kingstone High School is a Directly Licenced Centre and as such is able to offer students the opportunity of taking part in the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme.
The Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme in an internationally recognised and balanced programme of activities that develops participants’ confidence, self-esteem, social interaction and team working. It requires persistence, commitment and has a lasting impact on the attitudes and outlook of those that take part on the scheme.
Between the ages of 14 and 24, young people can progress through 3 levels of the award scheme from Bronze, to Silver and then Gold. In each level, students have to complete 3 sections: Skills; Physical; and Volunteering, over a given period of time. In addition, students have to train and then complete an expedition over a certain number of days and nights, depending on the level of the award they are working towards.
At Kingstone High School, all students in Year 9 and above have the opportunity of taking part in the award scheme. In the Autumn term of Year 9, the Bronze Award is launched to students in an assembly and also at a parents’ information evening.
Students are then supported in undertaking the requirements for the Skills, Physical and Volunteering sections by members of staff, either through extra-curricular activities or through activities the students do outside of school.
The expedition training element of the Bronze Award then takes place over a weekend around Easter. During the summer term students then work in groups to plan their expedition routes, which are then walked towards the end of the academic year.
Expeditions tend to take place over an agreed weekend in July using paths and trails within Herefordshire. The Gallery section has a range of photographs taken on recent expeditions.
